L'huitre, 7 x 7.75", original SOLD: L'huitre is the French word for oyster. When a friend shared a picture of the beautiful oysters she was enjoying on her dream trip in Cussac-Fort-Medoc, France, I knew they need to be immortalized. I integrated more pastel blues and lavenders than in the original photograph to heighten the magical feeling of the moment for her. The world certainly was her oyster!
Seafood Berl, 8.5 x 12", original SOLD: Seafood Berl is painted from a photograph I took at a friend's annual Memorial Day crawfish boil in Crystal Beach, TX. Often, a Deep South accent leaves words like oil and boil unrecognizable and pronounced with an er, rather than an oi, sound. I once knew a girl who named her dog "Earl" but it was spelled O-I-L!
Cutthroat Catch, 8 x 10", original SOLD: Cutthroat Catch was another moment I immortalized for a friend-his first catch on a fly rod. This gorgeous Cutthroat Trout was caught up on the mesa near Grand Junction, CO. The texture of his scales was created through a variety of methods, including painting through a length of mesh ribbon.
One in Attic, 11 x 14": One in Attic was created for a themed art showcase at WAS-H in honor of the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, showing the beautiful historic details in the homes of New Orleans against the chaos caused by rushing water, creeping mold blooms, and multiple water lines.
Big Bellied Babies, 7.5 x 11": These Big Bellied Babies were very excited to meet my children at our local interactive zoo and aquarium. They bobbed against the glass, showing us their spotted bellies...and who doesn't love a good polka dot? This painting is the first watercolor I completed outside of my introductory class, and I was captivated by the colors and reflections of the water around them. This interest in painting water and its reflections has carried over to many additional works of mine.
Hungry Boys, 7.5 x 11": I tackled Hungry Boys immediately after finishing Big Bellied Babies. The rounded mouths of the Koi are reaching up for the live baby shrimp that I dangled over their tank. They truly were hungry boys, and they splashed us as they clamored to get the next bite. The ripples in the water created a beautiful distortion of the fish and creatures in the water below them.
